CENLA Needs Your Help!!
All autocross events rely on
participant workers and those who volunteer to participate in certain key
positions. These positions are very valuable to the region and are
absolutely required to make an autocross event possible.
Here is a list of key
positions that must be filled to host an event:
- Event Chair - The Event Chair is the manager for
the event. He/ she is responsible for a number of tasks - most of
which will be delegated to Regional Chiefs. Event Chairs for CENLA events run
for just $10!

- Safety Steward - This is a valuable, trained
position that is in place to oversee the safe operation of the
event. Safety is extremely important. The safe operation of
our events is imperative to the region's ability to continue having a
lot to race in. At least one Safety Steward is required
for an event to take place.

- Tech Inspector - Tech Inspectors are responsible
for checking participants cars for race
worthiness. Training is quick and can be done the day of the
race. 2 to 4 tech inspectors are required for the smooth operation
of an autocross event.

- Registration (on site) - Registration workers register
drivers, accept payment, and verify that participants possess valid
drivers licenses. They also make sure that participants and
spectators sign the SCCA waver and wear the wrist bands. Registration requires
2 workers.
- Timing & Scoring - Timing and Scoring workers are
responsible for the setup, operation, and breakdown of the timer,
display board, PC, and PA system. Timing and
Scoring workers run the Grid, Start line, T&S computer and software,
and assembles trophies. Timing and Scoring
requires 4 to 5 workers to operate the T&S system, run the Grid
area, assemble trophies, and man the start line.
- Chief of Workers - The Chief of workers helps
determine the run-work schedule, assigns workers to required tasks and
corner stations, and tracks worker participation. This is a key
position to insure that the event runs smoothly. One Chief of
Workers is required for the smooth operation of autocross events.
- Chief of Novices - The Chief of Novices conducts Novice
Meetings and Walkthroughs. This position is our first line contact
to our new members/participants. One or two Novice Chiefs add to the
smooth operation of autocross events.
- Station Workers - Station workers man the course
stations. Each station should have a minimum of 3 workers: a
flagman to wave off the driver if required and man the fire
extinguisher, a radio man to communicate with timing and scoring and
other stations, and at least one cone chaser. This position
entails the assessment of penalties and the first line safety of drivers
on the course. If you have not signed up in advance for any other
position or have not been properly trained for other positions, this is
where you will be.

The job of the Regional Chiefs
is to be the point of contact for the Event Chair and assist in the
recruitment and training of other members to that
chief’s job. It DOES NOT mean that the Chief has to do their
designated job at every event. The idea is to have a number of members/
participants under each chief that have been trained and are prepared to
serve at a given event. Usually, a member that knows that they will be
attending a given event can contact their Chief and volunteer in advance (1
or 2 weeks) of the event date. This allows the Event Chair to know that
the position is covered and also gives the participant some control over
their work assignment.
If you see a
work description that interest you, please contact that Regional
Chief. If more than one interest you, feel
free to cross-train between jobs.
